THE
GLASSHOUSE, 2002
This is where I started to use the technique of Macramé,
a hobby/craft that became very popular in the late 1960's
- mid 1970's. I discovered this former craze while trawling
charity shops for old books and on finding craftmaking/hobby
manuals with the distinctive style so typical of that
era I became fascinated with the whole craftmaking trend.
I was particularly interested in the juxtaposition of
the modern day family manically trying to recreate a rural
idyll by using natural materials such as rope and shells
to craft their often crude assemblages. I chose to use
man-made materials for my work emphasising the 'domestic'
in contemporary culture. Because 'SUPERWIFE' dealt
with agoraphobia and compulsive activity I used plastic-coated
multi-coloured washing line knotted onto clothes drying
racks.
